A Nighttime Adventure: Frogs in the Garden at Kakao Lodge
One of my favorite activities here at Kakao Lodge is exploring the garden at dusk. It’s not just a walk—it’s a treasure hunt for frogs, and once you know how to look, it’s amazing how many species you'll find hiding in plain sight. Over the years, I've learned that the garden is full of surprises, and a simple evening stroll can turn into an exciting quest to discover the colorful and fascinating creatures that call our property home.
As the sun begins to set and the temperature drops, the garden comes to life. My go-to time for frog hunting is just as the daylight fades and the first stars appear. You’ll need a flashlight (or even just the light from your phone works) to spot them, and don’t forget to bring some bug spray—the local insects love to join in on the adventure!
The best place to start your search is at the small natural spring hidden just behind the parking area. This spot is a little haven for frogs, and it’s the perfect place to listen to their unique calls. At first, you’ll only hear the chorus of distant croaks, but if you pause, activate your senses, and really listen, you’ll begin to hear the distinct sounds of each species. Some frogs are more vocal than others, and with a little patience, you’ll start identifying them by their calls alone.
Take your time and look closely—frogs are masters of camouflage. Check beneath the long, broad leaves, near the water, and along the edges of the pond. This is where many frogs prefer to hide, especially the Kolbi, Blue Jeans, and See-Through frogs. Their colors range from bright blue to translucent green, making them both beautiful and tricky to spot.
If you’re wondering why the pond and the surrounding area look a little wild with old leaves and debris, it’s all part of our plan to support the frog population. We purposely avoid cleaning the area to let nature work its magic. The frogs lay their eggs underneath the leaves, and as the eggs hatch, they fall into the pond, where they can thrive. By leaving the garden as natural as possible, we’re giving the frogs a safe, undisturbed environment where they can grow and flourish.
So, the next time you visit Kakao Lodge, take a moment to slow down and explore the garden at dusk. You never know what you might find hiding beneath the leaves or croaking from the shadows. For me, it’s a peaceful yet thrilling way to connect with nature, and it’s one of the many little things I love about our property.
Breakfast with Luisito: Our Special Winter Guest
19 Nov 2024
For years now, we’ve had a very special visitor who adds a little extra magic to our mornings here at Kakao Lodge. From October to February, just as the weather starts to cool up north, we welcome a bright and charming Red Tangara bird, who has become a beloved part of our family. We’ve affectionately named him Luisito, and every year, he returns to our hotel to escape the chill of the North American winter in search of warmer weather.
Luisito's arrival is always a cause for celebration. He’s been visiting us for so long now that he’s... read more
